National Roofing Partners’ President Cautions Building Owners on the Dangers of Mold in Previously Flooded Buildings
(PRWEB) June 11, 2015 -- For the past 5 months, a large swath of the state Texas has been inundated with almost constant rain and subsequent flooding. “Last year during this period we had about 7 inches of rain,” said Dale Tyler, president of National Roofing Partners (NRP). “This year, we’ve had 35 inches of rain! While the water is receding there are other, equally dangerous problems ahead.
In addition to the loss of lives and billions of dollars in property damages, this once-in-a-generation Texas flood is wreaking even more havoc. The moisture and spring humidity is resulting in mold growing in commercial and residential building and for many, this could be deadly.
According to The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Molds are fungi that can be found both indoors and outdoors. Molds grow best in warm, damp, and humid conditions, and spread and reproduce by making spores.” The agency notes exposure to molds can cause symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation, and these are the minor problems. “Severe reactions may include fever and shortness of breath. Some people with chronic lung illnesses, such as obstructive lung disease, may develop mold infections in their lungs.” Mold is often found in buildings that have flooded.
“Water is the greatest solvent on earth,” said Dale Tyler. “It is relentless and will find a way in, Water can degrade fasteners and, over time, destroy a roof. Once the water is in roofing assemblies and a building’s insulation, it can sometimes be dried out, but most often, it can’t.”
What can building managers do before the next flood?
“Now is the time for commercial building owners and property managers to become proactive about their roofs and building envelopes,” Tyler said. “Roofs, windows and doors must be as close to water tight as possible. We offer inspections, recommendations and no-cost quotes for both commercial and residential buildings.”
“The health ramifications, not to mention the legal liabilities, of having mold in a building and potentially infecting workers or customers are serious,” he said. “Our team is ready to help and we can usually respond to request for inspection in 24 to 48 hours.”
