National Senior Games Medal Winner Plans to Move to New Facility
Houston, TX (PRWEB) April 14, 2014 -- Baker Lee Shannon, a medal winner in the National Senior Games, recently announced that he is planning on moving into The Abbey at Westminster’s new retirement community when it opens in August. The new facility will allow Shannon to maintain his active senior lifestyle.
At age 88, Shannon has earned many world-class swimming medals in the National Senior Games. Before participating in the senior games, he never thought much of athletics or competition.
“I learned to swim in the rice canals and the creeks, along with the turtles and the snakes and all the other critters,” says Shannon.
Then, one day in 1999 at the Houston Swim Club, he asked a judge to time his lap. He then realized, to his surprise, he had the speed to compete. Since that point, he’s competed in local and state swim meets and even advanced to global competitions in Australia and Canada.
“Swimming is great. I’ve had asthma all my life,” said Shannon. “I can’t run track or play other sports, but swimming is low impact and I can compete.”
Traveling to six or seven swim meets a year, he swims in all styles, including breast stroke, butterfly, back stroke and freestyle (from 50-yard to 200-yard events). He says the breast stroke is his best event, though he likes the camaraderie more than anything.
Shannon, a graduate of Texas A&M, plans to move into The Abbey at Westminster Plaza’s brand new retirement community so he can have access to an indoor heated swimming pool where he can practice for the next big swim meet. Shannon became familiar with The Abbey six years ago when The Abbey began hosting monthly meetings for The Alief Chapter of AARP, of which he was the president.
Now he plans to continue his own active lifestyle by utilizing the on-site amenities of a fitness center and gym, complete with cardio, weight and aerobic areas; cushioned indoor track; group exercise classes with personal trainer; water aerobics; and the only retirement community in Houston to offer a hydrotherapy pool for strength training. The convenience of these amenities in the adjacent Health and Wellness Building is the main reason Shannon chose to move to The Abbey at Westminster Plaza. There’s even a bistro where he can meet friends or grab a bite to eat or a cup of coffee after an invigorating dip in the pool.
