National Teams Utilize The Fork’s Exceptional Sporting Clays Facility
Norwood, North Carolina (PRWEB) June 28, 2013 -- Many of you may be sporting clay enthusiasts or have had the pleasure of enjoying a day at The Fork’s exceptional shooting facilities, but you may not know our local NRA Youth Hunter Education Teams utilize The Fork as a training center. Both the Park Ridge Sharpshooters (Albemarle) and the Gray Stone Day School Marksmanship Team (Misenheimer) often visit the Fork’s extraordinary sporting clays facility to ensure they are prepared for the National Competition. Having won last year in Mansfield, the teams are hoping their practice at the farm will prepare them for the impending competition.
Sporting clays originated in Great Britain in the early 1900’s as way to practice “driven-game shots.” Bob Brister, a writer for Field & Stream magazine, introduced the sport to Americans in July 1980. In 1985, the United States Sporting Clays Association (USSCA) was formed and the first U.S. National Sporting Clays Championship was held in Houston, Texas. Since the 1980’s sporting clays has been “one of the fastest growing sports in America, with more than three million people of all ages participating both competitively and recreationally (thebourbonlodge.com).”
The national teams, like many of our guests, enjoy the energetic 14-station Large-Gauge Course due to its challenging hillside shots, both above and below the shooter. The rolling piedmont course characterizes shots the students may see in Mansfield, Pennsylvania - one of the National Competition locations. Gray Stone and Park Ridge also benefit from the Covered Five-Stand. The Five-Stand projects clay pigeons into a more open environment, something the teams may see in Raton, New Mexico - the secondary National Competition location.
Though they may not encounter one in competition, the teams enjoy sneaking in time at our 4-person, Twelve-trap, 65-foot Tower/Flurry. For the students, the tower is the perfect combination of practice and play.
Best of luck to Park Ridge and Gray Stone!
