National Wildlife Federation Teams Up with the Forthcoming Fantasy Adventure The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug to Celebrate Courage, Community and Home
Reston, VA (PRWEB) December 17, 2013 -- National Wildlife Federation (NWF) is teaming up with Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the second in a trilogy of films adapting The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, with a variety of activities that underscore the film’s themes of courage, community and home. The film, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM), opens in theaters and IMAX® 3D December 13, 2013. As the education partner for the film, the National Wildlife Federation is providing online resources to help students, educators, parents and individuals start their own community wildlife habitat.

The movie continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. NWF will encourage students and adults to take actions in their own community, through NWF programs, such as NWF’s Community Wildlife Habitat, Certified Wildlife Habitat® and Schoolyard Habitats.
Students, teachers and individuals are encouraged to enter NWF's sweepstakes and answer the question: “What would you do to reclaim your Homeland?” at http://www.nwf.org/thehobbitmovie and describe what actions they or their class, school, community group or family are taking to improve the environment - at school, at home or in the community. Individuals could win a private screening for up to 100 friends and group members.
“We hope the popularity of ‘The Hobbit’ Trilogy and the themes of courage, community and sense of place will inspire moviegoers and fans of the book to come together to reclaim the places they love,” says Carey Stanton, NWF’s senior director for education.
