Nationally recognized COPES receives federal grant for 1.5 million for HIV-prevention and substance abuse awareness in Greater Louisville, Kentucky
Louisville, KY (PRWEB) September 28, 2015 -- The Council on Prevention and Education: Substances, Inc. (COPES) has received a five-year federal grant totaling $1.5 million from the U.S. Department for Health and Human Services (HHS), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) to be used for substance abuse and HIV prevention around the Greater Louisville area in Kentucky.
COPES has been providing personal and family strengthening programs for youth and adults for over 30 years. Through donations, grants, and both public and private contracts, COPES has been developing and providing specialized projects to improve personal, family and community well- being in the Louisville Metro area for decades.
This new federal grant will be used in a collaborative, community based effort, “Enhancing Community Connections Project” to reduce the risk of substance abuse and HIV among African Americans ages 13-24.
“The Louisville area has experienced recent upsurges in intravenous drug use involving both heroin and Opana and in both HIV and hepatitis infection rates”, said Ted Strader, Executive Director of COPES. “Young African Americans continue to experience extensive disparities that negatively impact the rate of substance use and HIV infection, and COPES works very hard to help this population fight this scourge and reduce the rates of substance abuse and HIV/AIDS in our community.”
