Nationwide Nominations Open for Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s Citizen Honors Program
Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) October 25, 2013 -- The Congressional Medal of Honor Society and its Foundation are seeking hometown heroes from across the nation for the Citizen Service Before Self (“Citizen Honors”) Awards Program. The CMOH Society is exclusively composed of the living recipients of the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest award for military valor. The Citizen Honors Medal is the highest award the CMOH Society can bestow and fittingly it is awarded on National Medal of Honor Day in ceremonies held at Arlington National Cemetery near the Tomb of the Unknowns.
With the Citizen Honors awards, the CMOH Society recognizes ordinary Americans who have done extraordinary things at the risk of their lives in a moment of crisis or in a lifetime of service to others. In establishing the Citizen Honors program,the living recipients seek to find hometown American heroes who through their actions have demonstrated the very traits that are emblematic of the Medal of Honor – courage, sacrifice, selflessness and patriotism.
American Heroes are made everyday in every state. If you know someone who meets the criteria, please nominate that person for the Citizen Honors awards by completing the online form at http://cmohfoundation.org/citizen-honors/. The deadline for nominations is Friday, January 10, 2014.
WHO CAN NOMINATE: Anyone who is aware of a fellow citizen, neighbor, co-worker, or ordinary American, who without the expectation of fame or reward, has placed others before self in some extraordinary way. Your hero could be a family member, neighbor, friend, or coworker, who has risked his or her life to save others, or has selflessly given time and resources to help others in need.
WHO CAN BE NOMINATED: Any United States citizen age 18 or older at the time of the action. Nominee’s actions must have occurred outside of one’s professional or vocational area of responsibility or conduct. Nominees who are deceased are eligible.
NOMINATION CRITERIA:
1) A singular act of heroism must have occurred within the last three years and must clearly demonstrate extraordinary heroism - a willingness to place one’s own life at risk for others.
2) A long-term act of selfless service can be for any number of years but must include the last three years and must clearly demonstrating service to others above self for an extended period of time without expectation of reward.
JUDGING PROCESS: An initial panel of judges of prominent Americans including Medal of Honor Recipients will consider all nominations and select 20 national finalists to receive CMOH Society Certificates of Commendation. From those finalists, a second panel comprised only of Medal of Honor Recipients will select three individuals to receive the Citizen Honors Medal at a ceremony on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 to be held near the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington Cemetery in Virginia.
