Native American Groups Urge Washington Team Owner Dan Snyder to Stop Claiming Name Change Issue Driven by "Elites" Who Are Not People of Color
Oneida Nation Homelands, NY (PRWEB) July 29, 2014 -- The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) and the Oneida Indian Nation have sent a letter to Washington NFL team owner Dan Snyder asking him to disavow suggestions by team representatives that opposition to the R-word racial slur is emanating from “well-intentioned elites” who are “not Native Americans.” To date, the team and Snyder have yet to respond.
The Change the Mascot campaign today decided to release the full text of the letter, which was first reported by Erik Brady of USA Today.* Snyder and the team have yet to respond.
In addition to the letter itself, NCAI and the Oneida Indian Nation attached a list containing the names of scores of Native Nations and organizations who have spoken out against the racially offensive name, passed Tribal resolutions, written letters to the NFL and Congress and taken action to stop the use of the R-word.
Snyder and the team also received a list of well-respected national civil rights, human rights and religious organizations which have joined the Change the Mascot campaign.
The full text of the letter to Dan Snyder can be found at the Change the Mascot website here.
