NETA PowerTest 2016 Delivers Week-Long, High-Powered Learning
Portage, Michigan (PRWEB) December 21, 2015 -- While the first two days of PowerTest 2016 offer 33 learning sessions, exploration of new products, and professional networking, the second two days continue the week’s educational focus with a selection of 12 in-depth, four-hour technical seminars. The presentations cover critical industry issues to help attendees prepare for challenges ahead.
PowerTest 2016— sponsored by NETA – InterNational Electrical Testing Association and scheduled for March 14-18, 2016 at the Omni Fort Worth Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas — represents the largest gathering of electrical power systems professionals in the industry. PowerTest is the only conference and trade show specifically designed for the electrical testing industry.
Attendees registering now through December 31, 2015, can save $100 off their registration.
PowerTest Wednesday
Wednesday, March 16, 2016, features six four-hour seminars including:
• Introduction to IEC 61850 Protection, Jay Gosalia, Doble Engineering Company — a basic introduction to the upcoming standard for substation design and communication, IEC 61850. Attendees will improve their understanding of the new way to do protection and control.
• Basic Power Factor Theory, Keith Hill and Rick Youngblood, Doble Engineering Company — an introduction for both experienced and inexperienced technicians to the terminology and theory in using power factor as a test method. The importance of analyzing the current, watts, capacitance, and power factor to determine the health of apparatus and the different test modes used will be covered.
• Maintenance and Testing of Battery Systems, Tom Sandri, Shermco Industries — an introduction to stationary batteries and required maintenance and testing. Learn to identify various types of batteries, their construction, and intended applications, ranging from large UPS at data centers to protection and control at substations. The session defines safety and hazards related to batteries and testing.
• Power Factor Testing of Instrument Transformers, Keith Hill and Rick Youngblood, Doble Engineering Company — test procedures used to perform power factor tests for instrument transformers such as line-to-ground potential transformers, two-bushing potential transformers, single-phase metering outfits, current transformers without test tap, current transformers with test tap, and the capacitance coupled voltage transformer.
• Hands-On Protection Troubleshooting 2.0 Session, Matt Watkins, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories — session description forthcoming.
• Risk Assessment Techniques Using NFPA 70E: A Primer, Jim White, Shermco Industries — tutorial answers questions about conducting risk assessments by referencing NFPA 70E. Helps attendees develop a risk assessment and understand how to apply that information effectively.
PowerTest Thursday
Thursday, March 17, 2016, also offers six four-hour seminars, including:
• Changing the Game: Sanity, Simplicity, and Sustainability in Human Performance, Stacey Hefner, Practicing Perfection Institute — a sane, simple, sustainable approach to human performance. Gain a solid understanding of why it’s important, and a set of strategies and tools to help workers do their jobs better, safer, and more efficiently.
• Cable Fault Location: Not for the Faint of Heart, Tom Sandri, Shermco Industries — an introduction to modern cable fault location procedures and techniques for low-voltage and medium-voltage cables. Learn the application of each technique along with its advantages and limitations. Learn to implement a comprehensive fault location strategy and select the appropriate technique, equipment, and procedure for successful cable fault location.
• Commissioning of Power Transformers, Donald Platts, OMICRON electronics Corp. USA — a summary of the commissioning steps recommended in IEEE C57.93 Guide for Installation and Maintenance of Liquid-Immersed Power Transformers, focusing on electrical testing during commissioning to ensure that the transformer is ready to begin a productive lifetime of serving the load.
• Power Factor Testing of Power Transformers, Keith Hill and Rick Youngblood, Doble Engineering Company — covers test procedures used to perform power factor tests for two-winding transformers (oil-filled and dry types), shielded transformers, wye-wye internally connected neutrals, three-winding auto transformer with tertiary, and auto transformers without tertiary. Includes review of excitation current test procedures for single-phase, three-phase delta, and three-phase wye.
• Event Analysis with Practical Examples for Testing and Commissioning, Karl Zimmerman and Dave Costello, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories — session description forthcoming.
• Understanding Ground Resistance and Resistivity Testing, Tom Sandri, Shermco Industries — focuses on test methods for determining ground resistivity and measuring ground resistance of grounding systems and connections.
Bonus Learning on PowerTest Friday
To get the most out of PowerTest 2016, attendees are encouraged to stay for Friday, March 18, 2016’s Doble Laboratory Seminar, designed for engineers, chemists, and others responsible for reviewing data and interpreting laboratory results to detect and identify problems within electric apparatus. The seminar will be interactive, combining theoretical background with practical experience and hands-on examples, including case studies illustrating common problems found in the field.
