NETA Presents Karl Zimmerman With Its Prestigious Alliance Recognition Award
Portage, Michigan (PRWEB) April 10, 2015 -- NETA – The InterNational Electrical Testing Association, an ANSI Accredited standards developing organization, presented its annual Alliance Recognition Award to Karl Zimmerman, Regional Technical Manager for Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL). The award, which recognizes a NETA Alliance Partner who has exceeded all expectations in advocating for the association and its Accredited Companies, was presented at the PowerTest Member and Alliance Luncheon on March 2, 2015, in Nashville, Tennessee, by Alliance Program Chair Jim Cialdea, CEO of 3-C Electrical Company, Inc.
Zimmerman has been a fixture at NETA’s annual PowerTest conference since the mid-1990s when he first presented at the conference in Baltimore, Maryland. He is an active member of the IEEE Power System Relaying Committee and is Vice Chair of the Line Protection Subcommittee. Zimmerman received his BSEE at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, in 1982. In his current position, his responsibilities include providing application support and technical training for SEL relay users.
Zimmerman says he has remained a steadfast supporter of NETA because of the association’s “spirit of seeking continuous improvement and increased understanding of evolving technologies.”
When he first heard Zimmerman present at a PowerTest conference, NETA President David Huffman recalls thinking Zimmerman was “one of the most brilliant people” he had ever met. “I learned how dedicated he is to the industry and how approachable he is. He is always friendly, always has a good word to say, and is always helpful. He has such knowledge and experience, and he’s a great person to discuss electrical problems with,” Huffman says.
“There are certain individuals and colleagues in the industry who stand out from the crowd, and Karl is definitely one to classify as a stand-out,” adds Ron Widup, President of Shermco Industries.
Zimmerman is known for saying that electrical testing professionals will be good at their jobs if they like to learn and like to teach. “He’s stayed true to this over the long haul of his career — always enjoying learning, becoming an expert, and solving problems,” says Dave Costello, Technical Support Manager at SEL. “He's eager to collaborate, provide a sanity check, an opinion, or be a sounding board. And he is always trying to break down complicated material in an understandable way, trying to identify things that people struggle with and then teach, preach, and improve."
Costello says that Zimmerman also demonstrates a willingness to step up, volunteer for any task, and take on leadership roles. “His behavior is a good model for all of us, especially young engineers now,” Costello says. “He's demonstrated that competitors can collaborate and respectfully work together for the larger industry goals like improving reliability.”
Zimmerman lives with his wife, Bridget, in the Historic Soulard neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. A dedicated lover of music, he and his wife play in several bands and are training for their third half marathon.
