NeuroRecovery Training Institute Founder Andrea Behrman Featured in Louisville’s Courier-Journal
Louisville, KY (PRWEB) February 27, 2015 -- The NeuroRecovery Training Institute (NeuroRTI) is proud to announce that founder, Dr. Andrea Behrman, PhD, PT, FAPTA, University of Louisville Department of Neurological Surgery Professor, and Co-Director of the Reeve Foundation NeuroRecovery Network, was recently featured alongside patient Kyle Bartolini in Louisville’s Courier-Journal.
Kyle, who was paralyzed by an accidental gunshot when he was three and a half years old, is now an active teenager who loves to fish, swim, and play paintball with the help of crutches or a walker, thanks to Behrman’s pediatric locomotor training program. Since November 2013, Behrman has been teaching the founding principles of her pediatric locomotor training program to pediatric physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and rehab technicians through NeuroRTI.
The intensive course, provided in cooperation with the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, reviews the latest research in activity-based therapy as it applies to the pediatric population with neurological dysfunction including cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, and brain injury. Participants will learn patient evaluation and progression using a body weight support system, retraining on the treadmill, over ground assessment and progression, and community ambulation and activity training.
“This advanced locomotor training course is designed specifically to address the needs of the pediatric population and is based on both clinical and research experience,” said Dr. Behrman. “What we’ve learned about the spinal cord over the years has been astounding, especially in terms of recovery. To be able to change the quality of life in these children is a huge victory.”
The course, based on research conducted by Behrman and Shelley Trimble, PT, will take place from July 31 to August 2, 2015 at Frazier Rehabilitation Institute in Louisville, KY. Note: Teams working primarily with adult neuro populations are encouraged to register for the Introductory Locomotor Training Principles and Practice courses offered August 14-16 at The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH and November 6-8 at TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston, TX.
