NeuroTek Medical, Inc. Issued First Patent for Non-Invasive Headache Treatment Method and Apparatus
Dallas, TX (PRWEB) November 20, 2013 -- NeuroTek Medical, Inc. announced today its issuance from the United States Patent office of patent 8,560,075 that covers “Apparatus and Method for the Treatment of Headache.” The company plans to apply this technology to a Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator (TENS) called TONES™. The battery-operated device stimulates the occipital nerve to treat headache pain in an abortive and/or preventive manner.
“With this patent in place, we will be well-positioned to release TONES™ in the U.S. market,” stated Alejandro Covalin, inventor of the technology and device. “There is a need for non-invasive headache treatment and TONES™ is the answer.”
More than 45 million Americans suffer from headaches severe enough to seek medical help. According to the American Migraine Foundation, pain from migraines alone cost the U.S. over $20 billion each year. Costs are attributed to direct medical expenses such as doctor visits and medications as well as indirect expenses such as missed work and lost productivity. TONES™ is currently undergoing testing and development and is expected to be available in 2015.
“The TENS unit and its electrodes are built into a unitary device, facilitating self-administered treatment,” stated Covalin. “Headaches often have sudden onset and can be debilitating. With our portable TONES™ device, patients have access to immediate relief, anytime, anywhere. It is head-band-bound to the back of the head for hands-free treatment, giving patients the freedom to move around and perform regular tasks.”
According to the American Council for Headache Education (ACHE) and to the National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC), the most commonly used treatment for headache pain is pharmacological, which, depending on the drug, may have various side effects. The TONES™ device is a non-invasive alternative for headache sufferers.
NeuroTek Medical is participating in Health Wildcatters, a Dallas healthcare startup accelerator. The program’s first pitch day will be held November 20, 2013 at the George W. Bush Institute at Southern Methodist University (SMU). Pitch day is a culmination of the 12-week program that began in late August. The event will feature investors, entrepreneurs and business leaders.
