New Antimicrobial Stabilizers Made with Zemea® Propanediol

The latest additions to this line, sensiva® PA 30 and sensiva® PA 40, both feature the natural, preservative-boosting ingredient, Zemea® propanediol.
Zemea® is a natural, 100 percent biobased ingredient made from corn starch through fermentation and developed for use in the cosmetics and personal care market. It is a high-performance, environmentally friendly sustainable alternative to petroleum-based glycols and glycerin, where the product’s lack of skin irritation, improved moisturization and excellent sensory properties are benefits. Zemea® is approved as a natural ingredient by Ecocert and the Natural Products Association; it is certified 100 percent biobased by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and has both Kosher and Halal certifications.
Schülke’s sensiva® PA 30, combines the antimicrobial activity of two nature-identical fragrance ingredients with the boosting and skin care properties of naturally derived Zemea® propanediol, for a soft preservative system that is ideal for leave-on, rinse-off, wet-wipe and sensitive skin applications. Challenge tests performed on a variety of cosmetic formulations show sensiva® PA 30 to be an effective antimicrobial stabilizer at a use level of 1-2 percent. Additionally, it supports deodorant activity as it has been shown to inhibit the growth and multiplication of odor-causing bacteria. This combination of naturally derived and nature-identical ingredients makes it an excellent choice for nature-inspired cosmetics.
sensiva® PA 40 is the most recent evolution of the sensiva® line of multifunctional additives. It combines a nature-identical fragrance ingredient with the boosting of naturally derived Zemea® propanediol and adds a gentle synthetic for additional skin care properties and better antimicrobial efficacy. This combination allows sensiva® PA 40 to be used at levels similar to more traditional preservative blends, while remaining gentle to the skin. Like other products in the sensiva® product line, sensiva® PA 40 has been proven to inhibit the growth and multiplication of odor-causing bacteria. This multifunctional product can be used in leave-on, wet-wipe and sensitive skin applications at a use level of 0.5-1.5 percent to help maintain the microbiological stability of nature-inspired cosmetics.
