New Artist Residency in Oakland is Not Just About Music but Business Too
OAKLAND, CA (PRWEB) September 27, 2013 -- On September 30th, Zoo Labs will welcome five members of the band The Boston Boys to its first-ever music residency. The band was chosen from a national field of applicants.
For two weeks, the band will live at Zoo Labs—at no charge—with exclusive access to a state-of-the-art recording studio and engineers as they make music. At the same time, they will be mentored by experts and attend workshops to help them think creatively about how to grow their business. This pioneering program aims to support talented, entrepreneurial music-makers and redefine the ways things are done in the shifting landscape of the music industry.
Based on the insight that musicians and artists face many of the same challenges as innovators in the startup world, Zoo Labs is a place of mutual transformation, where artists and musicians can learn from entrepreneurs and vice versa.
"We're looking to help bands get off the ground not only with high-quality recordings of their music, but also with the tools they need to be effective entrepreneurs and be more in control of their future," explains cofounder, Anna Acquistapace. “We are committed to developing new ways to support artists and entrepreneurs at the intersections of music, art and technology.”
Often music recording studios are too costly for bands just starting out. With the shifts in the music industry, even recording labels are shying away from the high costs required to develop a new musical project. What’s more, just like bootstrapping startups, bands are expected to manage much of the business, from booking tours to creating websites and publicity. In this climate, the Zoo Labs Music Residency serves as a launchpad for innovative and entrepreneurial approaches to creating and distributing music.
Zoo Labs Music Residency will run from September 30 through October 14, 2013. A special event on Saturday, October 12, 2013, called “Release Day,” will celebrate the achievements of the residents with a private listening party, followed by a party and concert open to the public from 8pm-10pm.
