New Book Depicts Accomplished Life Of Spanish Civil War Hero
(PRWEB) September 04, 2015 -- CONCORD, N.H. – Barton Carter came from a wealthy New England family and disappeared while fighting in the Spanish Civil War when he was 23 years old. More than six decades later, a dream inspired his niece, author Nancy Barton Carter Clough, to tell his story.
The new book “Searching for Barton Carter: The story of a young American, who saved thousands of children’s lives during the Spanish Civil War and with three others created the blueprint for PLAN International” (published by iUniverse) tells of Carter’s life in story form, through reference to primary documents that elucidate Carter’s life.
After being jilted by his English fiancée two weeks before their wedding, Carter was asked by his Spanish friend to travel to Barcelona to retrieve the Spaniard’s family’s jewels. Carter jumped at the chance for an adventure and a change of scene.
During the trip, Carter’s beliefs radically changed. He volunteered to drive supplies from Valencia to war-torn Madrid, and later haul orphans back to Valencia. He saved the lives of 4,000 orphaned children and took part in conceptualizing the groundwork for PLAN International – an organization that works to promote child rights and lift children out of poverty.
Through her historical account of her uncle’s exciting yet abbreviated life, Clough teaches readers about the Spanish Civil War while exposing them to philosophical issues such as life after death and the authenticity of ghosts, psychics and mediums.

About the Author
Nancy Barton Carter Clough, a school psychologist, has a bachelor's degree from Colby College in Waterville, Maine; a master's degree from Notre Dame College in Manchester, New Hampshire; and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies from Rivier University in Nashua, New Hampshire. She worked for 30 years as a psychologist in several school districts throughout central New Hampshire and is currently working part time as a consultant. In 2006, she was elected by the New Hampshire Association of School Psychologists as the New Hampshire School Psychologist of the year.
