New Book Features Powerful Stories of People Who Overcame Addiction
New Jersey (PRWEB) April 25, 2015 -- In the United States alone, an estimated 23.5 million people aged twelve and above needed treatment for an illicit drug or alcohol problem in 2009 according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Survey on Drug Use and Health (published in September 2011). Beyond these alarming numbers are harrowing stories of men and women whose lives have been ravaged by substance abuse. David H. Kerr, founder and retired president of the nationally recognized provider of substance abuse treatment and support services, Integrity House, is familiar with these kinds of stories. In his new book, “The Voices of Integrity: Compelling Portrayals of Addiction,” he shares a glimpse into the devastations of addiction, but more importantly, he imparts hope in the form of stories of the people who have overcome this destructive disease.
Kerr established the Integrity House in 1968 in one of the toughest inner cities, Newark, N.J. In “The Voices of Integrity,” he traces the history of this treatment facility through the many compelling true stories of addiction, treatment and recovery, told by people who have completed the Integrity House program. The book gives the reader a solid understanding of addiction, the personal torment and the crimes essential to obtain money for the next “fix.” It describes the difficulty clean and sober addicts have in staying on the “road to recovery,” year after year. “The Voices of Integrity” also features achievements, insights, the help that is available and interviews of recovering addicts.
“People should feel and understand the torment and destruction that addiction causes. (In my book) the lucky survivors tell their story and it is not hard to understand how close to death they have come. Nearly a dozen recovering addicts tell stories that can convince the readers how drug use, starting at a young age, can progress year after year, taking over the addict’s total lifestyle,” Kerr says.
Informative and ultimately triumphant, “The Voices of Integrity” breaks through the statistics to give a humanistic view of the problem of addiction. It gives hope to those who are struggling with this harrowing disease and, to the rest, caution as well as an insightful glimpse into an otherwise unimaginable life.
