New Book from Praeclarus Press Presents a Social History of Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera on the 31st Anniversary of its Stage Debut in London
Amarillo, TX (PRWEB) October 09, 2017 -- On October 9, 1986, a new Lloyd Webber musical opened at Her Majesty's theater in London. The initial response was overwhelmingly positive, including a 10-minute standing ovation. But few could have guessed that this show, The Phantom of the Opera, would go on to smash every existing record and become the most successful entertainment piece of all time. On the 31st anniversary of its debut on the London stage, Praeclarus Press is pleased to announce a new book by Dr. Kathleen Kendall-Tackett: Phantom of the Opera: A Social History of the World’s Most Popular Musical. Kendall-Tackett’s book documents the story of the stage show, film, and controversial sequel. As Lloyd Webber's Phantom sequel, Love Never Dies, begins its North American tour, Phantom of the Opera: A Social History of the World's Most Popular Musical is particularly relevant.
Kendall-Tackett compiled stories from hundreds of interviews, articles, blog posts, and websites to fully understand how the Phantom stage play, film, and sequel were created, the successes of their creators, and the scandals and controversies that surrounded them. This social history explains why Andrew Lloyd Webber’s greatest musical transcends generations and how it became such an enduring success. Dr. Kendall-Tackett explains why she wrote this book:
"I could not resist the story. It's not just about Lloyd Webber and his creative team. It's about the critics and fans, and how their roles have changed in the era of social media. It's also about the creative process, and how feedback from the fans and critics can influence it. And for something so popular, there has been a surprising amount of controversy, particularly around the film and sequel, Love Never Dies. This is the only book that explores the controversy around the Phantom sequel, which is now launching in North America. There has never been any entertainment event--no concert, sporting event, or play--that has ever made as much money or had the enduring success as Phantom of the Opera. I really wanted to tell the story of the people who made it."
Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, PhD, is a health psychologist and author who has won many awards for her research. She is author of more than 400 articles and edits two peer-reviewed journals. Phantom of the Opera: A Social History of the World’s Most Popular Musical is her 35th book. Dr. Kendall-Tackett is a Clinical Associate Professor at Texas Tech University School of Medicine and lives in Amarillo, Texas.
