New book identifies solution for structural, diffraction problems in quasicrystals
SAN JOSE, Calif. (PRWEB) May 26, 2015 -- Antony J. Bourdillon, a published scientific researcher from the U.K., reveals his solution for the structural and diffraction problems in quasicrystals in his new book, “Metric, Myth & Quasicrystals” (published by AuthorHouse).
Quasicrystals are a relatively new scientific concept. Dan Shechtman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2011 for the discovery of quasicrystals, and he had to fight a fierce battle against established science to prove the configuration found in quasicrystals exist despite prior theory. Bourdillon’s book extends the theory by a new geometric space with general application in physics.
“I did some serendipitous experiments and was compelled to find the solution especially where all other workers had failed,” Bourdillon says. “This is the only book that combines the structural solution for quasicrystals with the diffraction solution.”
The quasicrystal that is sometimes called impossible is half-crystal, half-window-glass, Bourdillon says. He explains that it occupies a new three-dimensional geometric space and has a special metric for measurement, which he identifies in “Metric, Myth & Quasicrystals.”

About the Author
Antony J. Bourdillon, M.A., D.Phil. (Oxon), Ph.D. (Cantab), received his degrees from the Clarendon Laboratory at the University of Oxford. He did post-doctoral work at the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, before joining its Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy as permanent faculty. Subsequently, he was director of the Electron Microscope Unit at the University of New South Wales and then a professor at the State University of New York. In Singapore, he became professor of physics, professor of materials science, principal fellow at the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering, and proposer, builder, and director of the Singapore Synchrotron Light Source. More recently, he has conducted independent research, consulting for various university institutes and companies, including an x-ray lithography consortium that he championed. He has published six monographs and 200 journal articles.
