New Book Reveals Exhibition of Next-Generation Artwork

This ‘Me’ of Mine is an example of ‘distributed practice,’ a phrase coined to describe the nature and reality of contemporary art practice. It is a wide distribution of networks where individuals work independently and in cooperation moving beyond traditional boundaries and landscapes of art practice.
This ‘Me’ of Mine: Self, Time & Context in the Digital Age is one element of this distributed practice. It is an exhibition on the page, of the page, an exhibition for the interior self and all the unique private mental images which will be stimulated by reading its pages.
“The book form is unique, one I wanted to explore as a venue for presenting This ‘Me’ of Mine,” explains Boyer.
This ‘Me’ of Mine: Self, Time & Context in the Digital Age explores the project themes of self in relation to context (a context of social group influence, memory as a means of forming identity, objects as mediators of emotion and the influence of digital communications on identity) through interviews with the artists, essays and images of the artworks in the touring exhibitions. More than simply an exhibition catalogue, the book uses its own form, the written word, to explore these themes in a way that goes beyond a record of an exhibition. It presents various perspectives and approaches to creatively discuss the project themes, approaches which are as diverse as the artworks in the show. This diversity allows the book to move beyond the conventional exhibition catalogue format.

About the Author
Independent artist, curator and writer, Jane Boyer, has merged all of her creative disciplines in this one project creating a structure of social media networking, exhibition design, book design and authorship, and several formal and informal discursive platforms for This ‘Me’ of Mine. Boyer lives in France but travels often to the UK for her work. The reality of living at a ‘distance’ and the ‘immediacy’ of digital communications in Jane’s own working practices have proven to be a rich source of inspiration in developing This ‘Me’ of Mine.
