New Book Reveals the Difficulties of Forming Hobby-oriented Clubs

Queensland Society of Model & Experimental Engineers, Pine Valley Railway, has evolved over the years to an exciting venue where visitors can bring their children to enjoy the wildlife, the landscaped railway track and ride on the steam and electric locomotives built by club members.

About the Author
Tasmanian born, Dorothy Hartnett, was firmly entrenched in a business career when she had the opportunity to go to Art School in Queensland. This opened up an entirely different career path. Hartnett obtained a Fine Arts degree and taught at secondary schools for 8 years with regular art exhibitions of her paintings and sculpture during this period. Hartnett developed from painting to bronze and wood sculpture to sculptural blown glass in her own ‘Pangeza Studio’ from 1989. In 1994, Dorothy’s first book, “The Blossoms of Rose Cottage” was published, followed by “Forms Entwined, The life story of sculptors Kathleen& Leonard Shillam” in 1996. Always an avid traveler, Hartnett documents all she experiences. In 1999 Hartnett bought a video camera whilst coming through customs after having an exhibition of her glass works in New York and on her return began making short films from her stories. Through photography Hartnett developed an interest in the construction of scale model locomotives at a local train club. Hartnett viewed the engineering feats as incredibly sculptural and has filmed many trains and club events in Australia and America. Hartnett still lives in Queensland and continues her exploration of other cultures in the world, capturing exciting moments in her video camera and her pictorial diaries.
