CHICAGO (PRWEB) August 05, 2016 -- 70 million Americans are living with heart disease, cancer or other serious illness or injury leaving patients, family and friends asking, “what can I do and how do I get better?”
One day Mark Landiak was backpacking with his daughter in the bottom of the Grand Canyon and on the hike back up he suddenly began to sweat profusely, his legs were giving out, his breath was shortening and his heart was racing. Luckily, he made it out of the Canyon alive and after another episode during a 5K he was off to 10 months of hospital stays, testing and lab work resulting in a diagnosis of cardiac sarcoidosis.
His new book, “Getting Better,” highlights how he turned a diagnosis that should’ve been a death sentence into a quest for a higher quality of life and a prescription to help other patients as well as their families and friends.
“Like many rare diseases Sarcoidosis has no cure. I used a different approach to focus on the factors I could control to get better instead of just trying not to get worse,” Landiak said. “I made a decision to put all my efforts into preparing for the best despite many people telling me to prepare for the worst.”
“Getting Better” focuses on Landiak’s five F’s of the healing process: Faith, Family, Friends, Fitness, and even Fun. While many don’t view such a grave topic as having a lighter side, Landiak knows his sense of humor and playful nature with his family, friends and healthcare practitioners are a big part of what helped him get through some very difficult periods.
“I realize that everyone’s experience will be different when battling rare disease or serious injury,” Landiak said. “I hope patients, families and friends will read my story and find aspects of my experience that they can use to help themselves or a loved one with getting better.”
Landiak is donating proceeds from his book to the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research and has begun a personal philanthropic campaign called Climb for the Cure to Sarcoidosis, where he raises funds for research by climbing the staircases of landmark locations across the USA. Each step he takes is a testament to his recovery over a disease that almost took his life on multiple occasions. His goal is to inspire others with new ideas for fighting their own medical battles.
