New book shows how ‘The Presence of a Chaplain’ affects lives
(PRWEB) August 05, 2015 -- MONTICELLO, Fla. – After completing 2,400 hours in the Clinical Pastoral Education Programs at Johns Hopkins and the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, this journey as a clinician allowed Dr. Barbara Thomas-Reddick to gain the skills and the know-how in the profession of chaplaincy. This journey equipped her to care for patients, families, friends and staff, and she was able to witness after leaving the patients’ bedside, how “The Presence of a Chaplain” (published by Xlibris) made a difference in people’s lives.
She became inspired and passionate of how chaplaincy service assisted with providing a holistic plan of care for patients, families, friends and staff, and she became curious of how this same level of care would be a benefit in the public and private schools for the children. Her 10 years of experience in chaplaincy, and the compassion for the beloved community motivated her to receive additional knowledge, and begin a three year research in the school system, to seek out the benefits of how chaplaincy service would make a difference in schools, if included on the multi-interdisciplinary team.
“After the research, here we stand with the research and a book from a model for exploratory application,” Thomas-Reddick says. She shows that chaplains provide service from an interfaith belief and how they meet the individual where they are. Her book allows readers to self-examine and to take a look at the self in the mirror in the hope of gaining better self-awareness. According to the author, when chaplains are included on the team of care, this approach can possibly address problems like bullying, suicidal behavior, substance abuse, divorces, low self-esteem and mental issues. Thomas-Reddick states that, “this new era of care through chaplaincy raises the level of care and allows the individual to share, vent and self-disclose their thoughts and feelings as the chaplain asks open-ended questions. A chaplain creates a safe environment for the dialogue to begin, and once the dialogue begins, it is an opportunity to minimize or delete the NOISE in one’s life.”
