New Book Spotlights Sir Winston Churchill’s Racehorse Ownership
KINGS PARK, N.Y. (PRWEB) February 12, 2015 -- Churchillians around the world may be interested to learn more about Sir Winston Churchill’s venture into horseracing from Fred Glueckstein’s new book, “Churchill and Colonist II: The Story of Winston Churchill and His Famous Race Horse” (published by iUniverse).
Glueckstein’s new book is an exposition of Churchill’s experience as a racehorse owner. The statesman was 75 when he bought his first racehorse, Colonist II – a grey, French-bred colt. The horse proved to be just as steadfast and courageous as Churchill himself, Glueckstein says, and became one of the most popular and remarkable horses of his era, capturing the heart of a nation.
An excerpt from “Churchill and Colonist II”:
“The Racing Correspondent for The Times wrote the following day about Colonist II’s victory in the Ribblesdale Stakes. He wrote that ‘Colonist II was certainly an improving horse. The horse had now won three races and none of them more easily.’ The correspondent also wrote that ‘the racegoers were delighted that the eminent owner had entered the turf with the same success that he has achieved in all of his many pursuits.’”
