New Book ‘Ted and Tommy’ Tells True Story of War, Romance Set in World War II

WAGSTAFFE, Australia (PRWEB) April 22, 2015 -- When author Graham Ewen Eagleton’s parents passed away—his father in the year 2000, and his mother in 2007—he and his brothers were faced with the task that all families face sooner or later; the task of taking stock of their parents personal effects and of dispersing these sensibly and equitably. As they did, Eagleton was struck by the quality of the photographic and written record of Ted and Tommy’s wartime experiences and indeed of their post-war life together in Australia. More than that, he was overcome by a sense of gratitude for the life they had given him and of the example they had set. He wanted to tell their story, and that is how “Ted and Tommy” (published by Xlibris AU) came to be written.

“Ted and Tommy” is a love story set against the exceptional circumstances of a wartime bomber squadron in Great Britain. It traces the formation of their individual personalities and of the factors social, psychological and spiritual that brought them together and molded their development into an inseparable couple and generous parents.

Three strands of experience came together in the writing of this book: firstly, the autobiographical experiences of the author growing up as the eldest son of “Ted and Tommy;” secondly, their personal record left behind in words and photographs; and thirdly, elements of the wider historical narrative gleaned from published literature concerning mid-twentieth century Britain and Australia, particularly works relating to Bomber Command and 466 Royal Australian Air Force Squadron.

More than just a mere description of the exploits of the men and women of Bomber Command in the war against Hitler, “Ted and Tommy” examines the impact of that air war on two specific individuals, on the romantic relationship that developed between them, and on their subsequent marriage lived in the aftermath of tragic wartime experiences. Theirs was a relationship informed by traditional Christian values and transformed by their own deepening understanding of those traditions as their lives evolved together.

About the Author
Graham Eagleton is an Australian agricultural researcher and teacher of high school science. After education in the 1960s and 70s, Eagleton and his wife Nyet Fah worked in posts in north-western Australia, Somalia, China and Indonesia. Returning to Australia in 1995, he was employed as a teacher until retirement in 2007. He has a continuing research interest in the economic botany of Southeast Asia. He is currently working in Indonesia.
