New Borehole Logging Software Revolutionizes Industry
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 01, 2013 -- Twenty-five years in the making, GeoGraphics, which includes QuickLog Borehole Logging Software, QuickCross/Fence, QuickGIS, and QuickSoil is a powerful software system for creating borehole logs, well logs, lithology logs and cross sections. These soil boring diagrams are created much more quickly than using off-the shelf software such as AutoCAD or Excel. GeoGraphics is part database, part CAD drawing system, and part AGS data format import/export tool. It has applications in the following geology related fields: environmental, geotechnical, petroleum, and mining.
One of the key features of QuickLog working in tandem with QuickCross/Fence is that geologic cross sections can be created in minutes simply by choosing the already created boring log or well log files. The user simply selects "Browse" to choose each borehole log file or well log file in the order he or she wants the boring or well to appear on the cross section. In less than a second, the new cross section appears on the screen with the boreholes and wells draw in the correct X-Y locations and each geologic layer drawn to scale. The scaling alone in this cross section drawing process saves hours over doing it using AutoCAD. Now that the cross section is on the screen, the geologist can print it or use the menu of drawing tools to add new geologic layers, pinch-outs, lenses, saturation zones, etc. Unlike AutoCAD, QuickCross/Fence is specifically designed for creating cross sections - it places nodes at the contact points between the geologic layers. The geologist can then just "connect the dots."
This latest upgrade of the QuickLog software system allows the export of its borehole log software files to the AGS data file format. The AGS format is a data interchange format for the geotechnical community used widely around the world. It was setup in 1991 to reduce geotechnical data formats down to one standard format for transferring data between geotechnical & geoenvironmental software databases and applications. Data from multiple boring log files (.BOR) can now be exported into one AGS 4.0 format data file.
A big benefit of using QuickLog software with the AGS data format is the elimination of duplicate data entry. For example, in a typical geotechnical project, the geologist begins the boring log process by taking notes in his fieldbook. Often, he is in a hurry - so he writes a kind of shorthand. Next, he re-writes his notes neatly so that a data entry processor can read them. The processor then types the notes into a boring log software program such as QuickLog. If not using QuickCross/Fence, the borehole data then has to be re-entered into AutoCAD. Finally, if the geotechnical firm is using other modeling programs, the data has to be entered once again into those. On the other hand, if the geologist uses QuickLog from the beginning, on a tablet computer, he enters the borehole data just one time. He can then print his own boring log diagrams using QuickLog, print his own cross sections using QuickCross/Fence, and then export the data to AGS format to be used in other modelling software systems and databases.
In summary, QuickLog and QuickCross/Fence are huge time savers for the geotechnical fields. For more information, please visit http://www.mtechsoftware.com or call 310-822-3624.
