New Breast, Lung and Ovarian Cancer Treatment in Phase 1 Clinical Trials in Los Angeles
(PRWEB) April 30, 2015 -- The Cancer Center of Southern California is participating in the first phase of a two year clinical trial for a new therapeutic drug developed and sponsored by Bayer HealthCare for the treatment of advanced malignancies. Only a select number of national cancer treatment centers are currently involved in the clinical trials at this time. Phase 1 portion is a dose escalation study of the Bayer therapeutic for use in combination with Paclitaxel which is used to treat breast, non-small cell lung, and ovarian cancers.
“Participating in clinical trials is a vital part of our mission,” said Dr. Sant Chawla, director of the Cancer Center of Southern California. “Clinical trials give us access to the most advanced drug therapies possible and enable us to help more patients.”
The purpose of the Bayer HealthCare clinical trial is to identify and evaluate:
- Treatment's effect on on tumor growth
- Side effects at different dose levels and schedules
- Biomarkers explaining why some patients do or do not respond to treatment
Dr. Chawla is a renowned oncologist recognized for his pioneering efforts in groundbreaking clinical drug trials and sarcoma treatment. Dr. Chawla, together with Dr. Kumar Sankhala and Dr. Doris Quon, Cancer Center physician associates, have led investigations for several new therapeutics including TRC105 for angiosarcoma sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and three FDA-approved therapeutics Aldoxorubicin and Pazopanib for soft tissues sarcomas, and Eribulin for metastatic breast cancer.
