New Century Expands Adult Education Network to Hernando Women’s Prison
BROOKSVILLE, FL (PRWEB) February 23, 2015 -- “Our program serves women functioning anywhere from 2nd to 9th grade level. Using the New Century software, we have seen the women make great strides developing basic skills in a short period of time and be able to transfer into GED preparation,” said Ms. Charlotte McBride, Program Coordinator for Horizon Communities in Prison at Hernando.
New Century Education Foundation continues to expand its network of adult education sites, which are designed to move incarcerated adults to GED completion in a two-year time frame and help prepare inmates for successful reintegration to society. Working with Horizon Communities in Prison, New Century installed a learning center to serve female inmates in Hernando Correctional Institution in Brooksville, Florida with a capacity to hold up to 467 women.
New Century software is uniquely designed to help teachers succeed with adult basic education students, even those functioning as low as Kindergarten to 2nd Grade equivalents. Using adaptive diagnostics, highly personalized lesson paths, and lessons that use a guided instructional format and provide feedback to the student at each step, teachers are able to serve several students working at very different skill levels simultaneously. The software also alerts the teacher where their personal attention is needed most to keep students progressing.
“Research demonstrates that improved literacy and educational achievement result in reduced recidivism upon release. New Century’s demonstrated efficacy at improving graduation rates makes it an important part of any state strategy in reducing recidivism and the future cost of incarceration,” said Jim Griffin, President of New Century. The cost of recidivism in Florida is approximately $23, 800 per inmate, according to state figures.
New Century is a not-for-profit publisher that delivers educational software uniquely designed to help teachers succeed with At-Risk, Special Needs and Adult Students. New Century’s Intelligent Tutoring System is scientifically based and research validated.
