New Charity Campaign Inaugurated by Portee Insurance Raises Funds for Historical Sandy Spring Museum in Silver Spring, MD

Sandy Spring Museum is a wonderful archival resource for community members, which maintains the rich heritage of the entire area through its many exhibitions. At Sandy Spring Museum, it’s all about community. The museum was begun in 1981 by volunteers who were concerned about losing knowledge of the community’s colorful history, which seemed to be dwindling as each older resident passed away. Sandy Spring Museum found a permanent home in 1997, in an ideal complex situated on 7 beautifully landscaped acres of land – fittingly donated by a family whose ancestors settled in Sandy Spring in the late 1700’s. Now boasting a state-of-the-art research library and archival, photographic and artifact collections storage, the museum is a gathering place where people can develop meaningful connections by exploring community history through the visual, literary and performing arts. The permanent exhibit illustrates local history and tells stories of agricultural innovation, women’s suffrage, progressive education and a community adapting to changing times.
