New EMA Research Report Delves into How Big Data Impacts and Transforms IT Infrastructure
Boulder, Colo. (PRWEB) July 23, 2015 -- Enterprise Management Associates (EMA), a leading IT and data management research and consulting firm, today released a new research report titled “Big Data Impacts on IT Infrastructure and Management,” based on criteria defined by Shamus McGillicuddy, senior analyst of network management at EMA.
EMA analysts have closely followed the emergence and evolution of big data collection and analytics. In particular, EMA has tracked how the use of big data has become more relevant to IT planning and operations. For instance, 60% of enterprises revealed that they were using big data analytics to support one or more network management practices in the April 2014 study, "Managing Networks in the Age of Cloud, SDN, and Big Data: Network Management Megatrends 2014." This study also found that 40% of enterprises had experienced measureable impacts on the behavior of their network infrastructure due to the presence of big data projects.
These early findings around big data raised several questions that this report seeks to understand, including:
- How the presence of big data collection and analytics affects the behavior of IT infrastructure across all technology domains, including security, storage, compute and the network?
- If enterprises are collecting and analyzing IT infrastructure data in big data environments to support infrastructure planning and operations, what kinds of data are they collecting for that analysis?
- How big data analytics for hybrid IT affects infrastructure planning and operations practices.
“This research uncovers exactly how big data analytics affects the behavior and performance of IT infrastructure, and it also reveals how those impacts are affecting the planning and operational practices of the IT organizations that are experiencing those impacts,” said McGillicuddy. “The research also offers insight into how IT organizations are making big data technologies work for them. The use cases for big data analytics for IT are broad and varied. In fact, our findings indicate that as IT organizations gain experience with big data, they apply the technology to a broader range of use cases and with greater success.”
Key findings in this study include:
- As enterprises get started with big data, storage systems feel the greatest impact from the technology (58%), followed by networks, whose performance are affected by big data collection (45%) and backups of big data repositories (46%) However, as enterprises gain experience with big data and expand their use of it, the infrastructure impacts become more widespread, affecting the behavior and performance of server systems and cloud services.
- Enterprises that export IT monitoring data into big data environments for advanced analysis most commonly do it to enhance their capacity planning practices. At 70%, storage capacity planning was the most common use case, followed by server capacity planning (66%) and network capacity planning (57%). Other popular use cases for big data analytics for IT include availability and performance monitoring of networks, storage systems and servers, and troubleshooting of storage infrastructure issues.
- Among enterprises that export IT monitoring data to big data environments, application performance data (59%) is the most popular data type. However, other data types become more popular as enterprises expand their use of big data for this purpose. For instance, while just 28% of beginning users of big data export interpreted packet flow metadata to big data environments, 54% of advanced big data users do so.
- Enterprises report many benefits from their investments in big data analytics for IT, the most popular being more efficient use of infrastructure capacity (46%), a proactive ability to prevent problems (45%) and more efficient use of IT operational expenses (45%).
