New Gastric Ballooning technology, will it fly? Weightmasters provide their insight.
Gatwick, Surrey (PRWEB UK) 22 January 2014 -- On 21st January 2014, Sky News reported on new technology launched to fight obesity. The Obalon gastric balloon, some would say is ingenious, whilst others fear its methods. Designed by the San Diego firm Obalon Therapeutics, Obalon is a gastric balloon which unlike its predecessors, is packed in a gelatine capsule which dissolves in the stomach. The balloon is inflated through a tube going down the throat connected to the capsule, and then once inflated, the tube is pulled out.
Up to three balloons can be placed in the stomach and then after three months, they are removed using a traditional endoscopic procedure.
Weightmasters comment, “Although this could be classed as a minor surgical procedure, the endoscope to remove the balloon, plus the initial tube down the throat to insert it is still fairly invasive and many people could be reluctant to undergo the process. Additionally, £2000 per treatment will be out of the reach for many”.
