New Home Source Wins Seven Awards in The National Association of Real Estate Editors’ 65th Annual Journalism Awards
AUSTIN, Texas (PRWEB) July 22, 2015 -- New Home Source (NHS) was honored with seven awards in The National Association of Real Estate Editors’ (NAREE) 65th Annual Journalism Awards, which recognize excellence in reporting, writing and editing stories about residential and commercial real estate.
Presented Friday, June 26, 2016, at NAREE’s Annual Real Estate Journalism Conference at the InterContinental Miami hotel, the awards were judged by a panel of experts from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. Professor Emeritus Patrick S. Washburn, a former news reporter and editor, chaired the panel.
New Home Source and Bloomberg News received seven awards each, to lead the competition, followed by The Wall Street Journal with six awards. The journalism awards capped a four-day meeting attended by more than 150 real estate writers and editors from the nation’s leading newspapers, websites and magazines.
“As the new home authority, it’s critical that New Home Source not only help people with their search for the right home, but also educate and inspire them,” said Peter Brumme, vice president and general manager of Builders Digital Experience (BDX), parent company of New Home Source.
“Our articles, slideshows, videos and Infographics share a common theme,” Brumme added. “We not only inform home shoppers, we also increase their confidence by outlining the key steps to a new home. Homebuyers feel there is a place they can go to get answers from an expert who is in their corner.”
BDX Content Manager Patricia Garcia received a Bronze Award in the Best newsletter category, following up a Gold Award last year for the New Home Source Home of the Week newsletter. Judges said of the Home of the Week newsletter: “The presentation is attractive with practical content. A comprehensive package, it covers a variety of topics.”
Camilla McLaughlin, who contributes to New Home Source and Unique Homes, received three awards for her work for NHS: a Bronze Award for the President’s Award for Best Freelance Collection; a Silver Award for Best Home & Design Story; and a Bronze Award for Best Online Residential, Mortgage or Financial Real Estate Story.
Judges commented that “(McLaughlin) is clearly comfortable writing about a variety of topics, ranging from people sharing their homes with animal companions to the recovery of the luxury home market after the recession to homes maintaining themselves with ‘smart’ technology. Her writing is lively, informational, and informative.”
NHS contributor Ken Harney, who also writes a nationally syndicated column for The Washington Post, was awarded the Silver Award in the Best Column category. The judges stated “these columns are thought-provoking discussions about a variety of topics of interest to consumers and investors. He manages to deal with complex topics, frequently about the federal government and makes them easily understandable. He also consults experts and does valuable legwork.”
Marcie Geffner, a NHS contributor and freelancer for The Los Angeles Times and other media, received the Bronze Award for Best Trade Magazine Story. Judges were impressed by Geffner’s easy-to-read article on a timely topic: “This is a consumer story that offered practical tips on how to better use space in a home. The reporter consulted a variety of experts and made practical and concise suggestions.”
Lew Sichelman, who writes for New Home Source in addition to a nationally syndicated column on real estate, was honored with a Bronze Award in the Best Column category. Judges commented on Sichelman’s practical advice: “His columns are clearly written and know their audience — those buying or building homes. No-frills advice and suggestions are provided and explanations are jargon free about topics of wide interest.”
“Congratulations to Patricia Garcia for her back-to-back wins in a very competitive newsletter category; to Camilla McLaughlin for her three wins this year; and to our valued contributors Marcie Geffner, Ken Harney and Lew Sichelman for their well-deserved awards,” said Jay McKenzie, director of content and social media for BDX.
