New Ingenium Charter Middle School Opening in the San Fernando Valley to Offer Innovative “Flipped” Instruction
Canoga Park, CA (PRWEB) July 08, 2013 -- The Canoga Park/ West Hills Chamber of Commerce, local elected officials, Ingenium Schools, families, and students will gather for a ribbon cutting ceremony welcoming Ingenium Charter Middle School (ICMS) on Thursday, July 11, 2013 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the Columbus Middle School campus (22250 Elkwood Street, Canoga Park, CA 91304). ICMS will also host a community open enrollment event on Saturday, July 20, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., and will officially open its doors on Wednesday, August 7, 2013.
The new school will offer a “flipped instruction” model that will deliver teacher directed lessons at home through interactive videos and other multimedia and digital content. “Homework” will be moved to the classroom, creating a more collaborative and engaging classroom environment in which teachers can spend more time one-one-one with each student. All ICMS students will be provided with KUNO tablet computers to take home, enabling them to learn at their own pace. KUNO tablet representatives will be on-hand during the event to provide a demonstration

Since 2009, Ingenium Schools has used its Ingenium Learning System (ILS) – a well-rounded performance-based educational program focusing on the needs of each student through a student-centered environment – to provide high-quality instruction to hundreds of youth in some of Los Angeles’ most ethnically diverse and socio-economically disadvantaged communities. ICMS is the third school established by Ingenium Schools, a charter school management organization.
Ingenium’s two other schools, Barack Obama Charter School (BOCS) – an elementary school in Compton – and Ingenium Charter School (ICS) in Canoga Park, are both high-performing campuses. Using the ILS, BOCS’s Academic Performance Index (API) score increased by 175 points during the 2011-2012 school year — a notable achievement. ICS’s first and second year API scores were both over 800, very unusual for a new Title I charter school.
The ILS model is comprised of four key components – continuous improvement, shared vision, leadership and personal mastery. It is based on the Re-Inventing Schools Coalition (RISC) program developed at Alaska’s Chugach School District, which won the 2001 Baldrige Award, the nation’s highest award for organizational performance excellence.
“The ILS breaks away from traditional classroom settings where students are placed in classes based on their age (grade) and instead places students in classes based on their learning levels,” said Noreen. “At Ingenium, we engage students by guiding them to set their own learning goals and helping them meet their goals by mastering the standards they need to learn in order to advance to the next learning level. Middle school is a crucial time in a student’s life, so we look forward to the amazing transformations that will take place in the ICMS classrooms.”
