New Interactive Exhibit Coming to St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum
St. Augustine, FL (PRWEB) December 20, 2013 -- A single door on the Victorian-era Keepers’ House at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum will soon be the portal to an immersive historical adventure for visitors. Beginning in the fall of 2014, a new interactive exhibit will allow visitors to experience life as lightkeeper William Harn and his family did while living and working at the St. Augustine Light Station from 1875-1889.
“This exhibit is an exciting addition to the museum because it will provide a new level of authenticity, as well as interaction, for our guests,” said Brenda Swann, Deputy Director of Collections, Interpretations and Programs at the museum.
Construction on the new exhibit, entitled At Home with the Harns, is under way in the light station’s original, restored 1880 Keepers’ House. Once completed, the space will house a Victorian parlor with authentic furniture, silverware and other artifacts very similar to what the Harn family would have kept in their house during their residence.
Additional interactive technology will allow guests to select William Harn, his wife, his children or his assistant lightkeeper from a historical character list, before moving through the exhibit and light station grounds following a day in the life of their chosen figure.
“Every detail of the exhibit, right down to paint colors and wallpaper choices, is authentic to the Victorian era,” said Swann. “We really want visitors to step inside the Harn parlor and feel like they have been transported back in time.”
A generous donation enabled the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, to construct and curate the new exhibit. At Home with the Harns will complement the museum’s existing exhibits depicting over the 140 year history of the St. Augustine Light Station.
The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum is dedicated to discovering, preserving, presenting and keeping alive the maritime lore of the Nation’s Oldest PortSM.
