New Legal Studies/Pre-Law Program at Husson University
Bangor, Maine (PRWEB) October 03, 2013 -- Husson University recently added a new Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Legal Studies with a Pre-Law Concentration degree to the fall slate of course offerings available through the institution’s College of Business. This new program meets the needs of current students and prospective students who want to develop the skills necessary to succeed in law school.
"Our new Legal Studies Pre-Law program teaches students to think like lawyers. This can be an important competitive advantage for graduates interested in pursuing their education and succeeding in law school," said Assistant Professor Margaret Campbell, School of Legal Studies.
Although the American Bar Association (ABA) does not recommend any particular majors or courses for undergraduate education prior to law school, it does articulate a set of core skills and values important to a pre-law education. While other institutions offer some law courses and various pre-law minors, the curriculum foundation at Husson University is specifically aligned with ABA’s core skills and values. These include:
• Analytic and problem solving skills
• Critical reading skills
• Writing skills
• Oral communication and listening abilities
• General research skills
• Task organization and management skills
• Public service and the promotion of justice
The American Association for Paralegal Educators (AAfPE) recognizes Husson University’s Paralegal Studies degrees and certificate programs. The addition of this new Bachelor of Science degree in Legal Studies will significantly augment existing programs.
Husson University now has two legal concentration tracks available to students - Legal Studies and Paralegal Studies degrees or certificate.
As part of the Legal Studies degree, Husson created some new advanced classes. They include Civil Litigation II and Alternative Dispute Resolution II.
According to John R. Michaud, director for the School of Legal Studies at Husson University’s College of Business, “Students graduating from this program will be well prepared for the rigors of the law school. Since the coursework teaches graduates how to analyze situations and make educated arguments based on specific reasoning and principles, this degree will also be valuable for students pursuing careers in criminal justice or business.”
