New Mexico Orthopedic Specialist Dr. James Lubowitz was Selected to Lecture at the Arthroscopy Association of German Speaking Countries (AGA) on ACL Injuries in Skiers
Santa Fe, New Mexico (PRWEB) September 26, 2013 -- The Arthroscopy Association of German Speaking Countries (AGA) selected New Mexico orthopedic specialist James Lubowitz, MD as an international participant at the 2013 annual meeting in Wiesbaden, Germany. Serving as an honorary member of AGA since 2010, this was Dr. Lubowitz’ third selection as a participant to the Knee (ACL) Faculty at the AGA annual meetings.
Over the three day congress Dr. Lubowitz engaged in a variety of responsibilities most notably his lecture: "Return to Skiing After ACL Reconstruction." The objective of Dr. Lubowitz’ presentation was to educate his international peers on evidence based treatment techniques for skiers who have suffered an ACL tear.
As an internationally recognized orthopedic specialist, Dr. Lubowitz has published numerous studies on innovative treatment techniques for ACL reconstruction. The Journal of Arthroscopy and Related Surgery recently published an ACL reconstruction technique developed by Dr. Lubowitz. Research found that his "all-inside" ACL reconstruction technique is state-of-the-art and results in less pain than the standard technique.
Skiing has the highest ACL injury rate of any activity or sport. Dr. Lubowitz - U.S. Ski Team doctor for almost 20 years - is well versed on the subject of ACL injuries in skiers. To accredit his knowledge, Dr. Lubowitz and his team conducted a research study at the Taos Orthopaedic Institute in New Mexico. The study analyzed risk, prevention, and treatment of ACL injuries in skiers. This evidence based analysis was the main focus of Dr. Lubowitz’ presentation.
Most often, an ACL tear occurs from pivoting or landing from a jump. In the case of skiers, a mechanism called the "phantom foot" - a combination of forces from the tail end of the ski and the tight boot top - leverages the knee into a position of injury. The patient’s age, activity level, and severity of injury will dictate the treatment method. For skiers who intend to continue skiing, U.S. Ski Team doctor James Lubowitz recommends surgery. For patients who use both operative and non-operative treatment methods, the rehabilitation process is the most important step to a successful recovery.
Dr. Lubowitz heavily emphasized the rehabilitation process in his presentation outlining detailed exercises. Through his research, Dr. Lubowitz found that 99 percent of his patients returned to skiing after an ACL tear.
"It was a great honor for me to serve on the Faculty, and represent the ACL (knee anterior cruciate ligament) research from New Mexico, USA," said Dr. Lubowitz.
About Dr. Lubowitz
Completing his Bachelors of Arts at Harvard College in 1984, Dr. Lubowitz began his study of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he received his Doctors of Medicine in 1988. From there he served as a resident at the University California, Los Angeles Department of Orthopaedic Surgery from 1988 to 1992 and as a Chief Resident in 1993. From 1993 to 1994, Dr. Lubowitz served as an orthopedic specialist at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Fellow at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There he served as a team doctor for the local professional teams - Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Freedom, and Philadelphia Flyers. Dr. Lubowitz currently works as a New Mexico orthopedic specialist serving the Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and Los Alamos area.
