New Movement-Based Program Designed for Schools Helps Counter Obesity in Children and Improve Cognitive Skills
Milton, Vermont (PRWEB) January 29, 2014 -- Bushintai-Do, defined as “The Way of the Warrior in Mind and Body”, was developed by David Quinlan, owner of Martial Way Self-Defense Center of Milton, Colchester, and Saint Albans, Vermont. Working with Vermont middle school teachers for the past ten years, Quinlan has effectively integrated Bushintai-Do into the school curricula via online lessons and teacher support materials, and has created a school-based movement program now called, Bushintai-Do for the Classroom.
A synthesis of traditional Asian martial arts, Bushintai-Do contains no violent or dangerous techniques; rather it is a way for children and adolescents to reap the physical and mental benefits of martial arts training without any of the potential risks. Bushintai-Do for the Classroom is a research-based movement program based upon this martial art, and designed to bring this motivating physical activity to teachers and their students, via an online format.
Current and emerging research indicates that coordinated mind-body exercises found in the martial arts spark neurological benefits that facilitate the learning process, and a child’s capacity for learning. Bushintai-Do for the Classroom can bring this psycho-motor activity directly to schools, extracurricular programs, and educational groups via a web-based format. Guided by video instruction, students can experience the excitement, power and focus of Bushintai-Do, while learning about respect, perseverance and self-control.
“I would highly recommend Bushintai-Do for the Classroom. I have seen first hand the power of martial arts in relation to the growth and development of youth.”
-Josh Cate, Director, The Bellcate School, Essex ,VT
“The video lessons were easy to use, completely reliable...and fun!"
-Gina Krol, M.Ed, Teacher, Winooski Middle School, Winooski , VT
"We began using the online track of Bushintai-Do at the beginning of the school year, and it has been a fantastic option for us. We simply move the desks aside and watch the videos on the SmartBoard, following along with Dave Quinlan and his assistants. The nature of the videos allows us to "customize" lessons to the needs of the students. The program is exceptionally valuable for my students. It teaches them important lessons in responsibility, tenacity and self-control, and the ultimate sense of pride that they garner has been astounding... Bushintai-Do teaches and reinforces the skills that are necessary for successful studenting, learning and life in general. It is, quite simply, an amazing program."
-Brian Kravitz, M. Ed. Teacher, Georgia Elementary Middle School
Bushintai-Do supports First Lady Michelle Obama's initiative, "Let's Move", by helping schools incorporate the "Get Active" directive with a program designed by educators for educators, yet within a structured and flexible format. The lessons are in 25-minute segments, and can be shortened or lengthened to fit the class schedule, or even used as a structured break or recess time. Additional features include 5-minute at-the-desk movement breaks, “Brain Breaks,” that promote a positive use of transition times.
Features:
- The benefits of martial arts training become accessible to all students through a web-based program--without added preparation for the classroom teacher.
- Lessons in Bushintai-Do are taught by a professional martial artist and fitness educator, and support a student’s academic and personal development through physical activity.
- The playlist format for the 25-minute movement lessons make them flexible and easily adaptable to a variety of teaching schedules.
- The 5-minute “Brain Breaks” energize students and help with transition times.
- Optional curricular connections to the Common Core State Standards for writing and reading are featured in the Teacher’s Guide.
- 5% of the profits from the sale of this program are donated to Winooski (VT) public schools to promote the health and wellness of their students in grades preK through 12.
Bushintai-Do for the Classroom, designed as a solution for educators by educators and fitness experts, is a complete nonviolent martial arts system in itself; offering self-defense techniques, pre-arranged routines, a comprehensive fitness program, a positive philosophical foundation, and the integration of mind and body development in a classroom or group setting, web-based.
