New Novel Brings to Light Exciting Tale of the Underground Railway
Melrose Park, PA (PRWEB) September 13, 2013 -- Emma Marie Trusty, who published “The Underground Railroad: Ties that Bound Unveiled” in 1999, continues her exploration of an underground network of American citizens involved in helping fugitive slaves escape and live as free men in her outstanding new novel “Samuel’s Journey: Another Surprise.” Freedom takes all kinds of people into its service and this is true of Samuel, a teenage Quaker boy.
Freedom knows no time and place, and Samuel, of a strict Christian and Revolutionary American upbringing, born after the first official United States Census in 1790, and living in Salem, Mass., finds himself in the middle of secret but widespread activities among righteous and freedom-loving Americans, not the least of which is his family. It was not hard for the intelligent boy to become aware that his family was keeping a secret. He knows of Swedesboro, where he met some escaped slaves hiding out in a safe house – instinctively, he wished them well, not knowing that the town was a major junction in the underground railway.

Unbeknownst to Samuel, he is being positioned by his own family to be another strong back in the labor for African American freedom. He has quietly badgered his family about being let on in their “secrets.” He knows his elder brother Joshua knows and Samuel believes that he, too, can be trusted with secrets. One dark night, he is awakened by his dog Pal’s barking – peeking through a crack in the loft door, he discovered his father leading slaves into shelter. Eventually, his father tells him that his family helped slaves escape. Some states called it breaking the law. Other states believe slaves have a right to their personal liberty. Samuel’s innocent dreams of action and adventure become deeply felt articles of faith when he found a surprise awaited him – he is told that he himself is part of the family’s underground activities. Thus Samuel’s real journey begins, and readers follow him (and Emma Marie Trusty) into secret (and exciting) sectors of America which slowly but surely worked for the total freedom of all men who walked the American way.

About the Author
Emma Marie Trusty was born in Cumberland County, N.J. She graduated from Bridgeton High School and received her RN diploma from Newark City Hospital. Other studies included two years of Bible school at Manna Bible Institute. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Temple University in 1964 and a master’s degree in pastoral counseling from LaSalle University in 1995. She and her husband, Rev. Andrew David Trusty, were missionaries in Liberia, West Africa, for seven years, where she practiced nursing and he was the mission superintendent. This mother of four also has eleven grandchildren. As a retiree, she enjoys writing and gardening. In 1999, she published “The Underground Railroad: Ties that Bound Unveiled.”
