New Novel Takes On Irish Immigrant Issues in 19th-century England
Broad Campden, England (PRWEB) April 02, 2014 -- Many second- and third-generation Irish have heard stories passed down from their ancestors about the difficulties that faced Irish immigrants after arriving in other countries. In his new novel, “A Long Way Home” (published by AuthorHouse), Terence Dillon introduces important issues to do with race, class and religion that were often faced by Irish immigrants living in England.
“In addition to the difficulties facing Irish immigrants,” Dillon explains, “this book deals with the split within the Irish community created by those who sought conciliation and those who sought confrontation and the mistake of categorizing a race of people as all the same.”
Protagonist Paul Doherty is a young Irishman living in Kerry, Ireland in the late 19th century. He and his friend, Will Kennedy, emigrate from Ireland to England where they are befriended by Hardy, a philanthropic English businessman. The jobs Hardy gives them help improve their income and status in England, and the relationship is given an extra dimension when Paul falls in love with Hardy’s daughter, Mary.
Paul is a conciliator, as much an opposite as one could be from the confrontational Will, who joins the Irish Republican Brotherhood. Their continued friendship, despite different choices, has significant implications for both and leads to a dramatic conclusion.

Terence Dillon, grandson of an Irish immigrant, was born in a mining village in Yorkshire, England. He has led a successful life in education having been a headmaster, one of Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Schools (HMI) and an international educational consultant. He is now a member of Creative Campden and a governor at St. Catharine’s Catholic primary school in Chipping Campden. He has also written “Light Me a Candle,” “The King’s Beacon” and “Quarry Lane.”
