New Novel ‘The Shaman of the Alligewi’ Explores Hopewell Nation
West Union, Ohio (PRWEB) August 12, 2014 -- Around 200 B.C., a Native American culture known as the Hopewell emerged in Ohio. Author Michael R. Hall wanted to explore the inner workings of this unique cultural group. His vision of this tribe is depicted in his new novel “The Shaman of the Alligewi: An Ohio Hopewell Indian Historical Fiction” (published by Trafford Publishing).
The time period is 250 A.D. A young boy named Spotted Elk is getting ready to enter manhood within his Ohio Valley tribe. The tribal members, however, have identified Spotted Elk as the cause of bad luck within the tribe. After taking part in a dangerous tribal ceremony, the boy is reincarnated as a shaman’s apprentice. As a result of this, he learns about the delicate balance between the universe, nature and the spirit world.
Hall hopes his book will shed light on a pre-Columbian culture of America.
An excerpt from “The Shaman of the Alligewi”:
“The shaman now painted two thick lines of red ocher down the left side of his face, with each one passing across his left eye and then swerving across his cheek and to the left side. Two more lines in like fashion were drawn on his right side crossing through his eye and swerving across his right cheek toward the back. Spotted Elk recognized that this was how the Alligewi painted the faces of their dead.”
