New Online Gaming Platform Emerald Online to Launch in 2014
New York, US (PRWEB) December 31, 2013 -- Indie developer James Currie has been into online gaming for most of his life. A fan of massive multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPG) like Infiniminer and Minecraft, Currie often thought about how he could improve upon those games with his own development skills. Now, he is planning to do just that with the release of Emerald Online, a new voxel based MMORPG he developed using his old favorites as inspiration.
“I've been a gamer as long as I can remember and an indie developer for the last 6 years,” Currie said. “I've been following the rise and fall of subscription MMOs and have seen the conceptual split of the sandbox MMOs that let players do anything they want and theme park MMOs that let players go anywhere they want in their world in the confines of a set of quests and a linear story to follow. This project sprung from a thought I had one day. ‘Wouldn’t it be great if I could give gamers a compromise between the two?’”
A voxel based MMORPG, Emerald Online gives players the freedom of a sandbox MMO to do anything and go anywhere they want, but still has a quest and progression system players must follow. Essentially, the game takes a leveling and questing system within an online world and adds elements of a block-based world. Players may have to mine for key elements to a quest, or optionally, may explore a dungeon or kill a boss to complete the same quest. Emerald Online’s uniqueness is that, it is a MMORPG with a consistent world. Unlike other voxel based games that are completely randomly generated, Emerald Online blends auto-generated landmasses with consistent areas where all players can interact. These key areas make up a huge world consisting of areas players can visit and revisit, to create a living, breathing world.
“On the surface it’s obvious that the look of the game is heavily influenced by Minecraft. But this is only superficial,” Currie continued. “The code base for Emerald Online is completely original, not based on the Infiniminer source code that Minecraft uses. And, the gameplay and character progression in Emerald Online is very different. The character progresses through a leveling and skill system to become stronger and wield more powerful items. Emerald Online places more emphasis on exploration, completion of quests, progression and the increasing strength and impact of your character.” All of the key elements of Emerald Online are in place including the user interface, mining, environment, terrain generation and crafting. Currie is currently looking to grow a development team enough to push Emerald Online into public testing in 2014. This will be available initially to those that support the Kickstarter campaign.
