New Per Wickstrom Blog Post Asks: Are Alcohol Ads Reaching Too Many Young People?
(PRWEB) December 30, 2013 -- The latest blog post by Per Wickstrom at http://www.PerWickstrom.com is asking an important question that parents, educators and legislators must explore now instead of later: are alcohol ads reaching too many young people?
“Despite the fact that alcohol ads are subject to many regulations, they continue to appear in programs that are viewed by millions of young people,” commented Per Wickstrom. “We need take a hard look here and decide, as a society, whether the business interests of alcohol companies and advertising firms outweigh the health risks that we could be subjecting our young people to – risks that can include alcohol addiction and a myriad of other issues that are devastating to individuals, families and communities.”
In the blog post, Per Wickstom highlights that:
• According to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, alcohol advertising on TV does indeed reach too many young people in the US.
• A study published in the journal Pediatrics revealed that a 12 year old subjected to some form of alcohol advertising is more likely to start drinking alcohol by the time they reach 14 or 15 – with more serious alcohol-related problems (such as academic decline) setting in at around 16.
• A study of almost 200,000 alcohol advertisements found that nearly 25% were shown on programs where 30% of the viewership was under 20 years old.
“The bottom-line is that the alcohol industry’s current self-regulation practices with respect to how it advertises its products to young people must be overhauled,” added Per Wickstrom. “We need to appreciate that young people are impressionable and often fail to grasp the short and long-term implications of alcohol consumption and, in many cases, abuse and addiction. And of course, while we’re re-evaluating advertising practices and standards, we need to implement more measures to educate young people about the risks of alcohol abuse.”
