New Picture book takes readers ‘Close to the Edge’
RACINE, Wis. (PRWEB) January 29, 2015 -- The worlds of fine art and comic art meet in Jerry Belland’s “Close to the Edge”(published by Xlibris). An established artist from the upper Midwest, Belland turns to the single-panel cartoon format with inspired results.
Taken all together, these images create a world of their own. It is a world where readers can watch Jesus urinate on Las Vegas or meet the grim reaper in the grocery store parking lot or confess humanity’s sins at the Donuts Anonymous meeting. The author’s distinctive drawing style is complimented by his pointed use of titles and sidebars, which often heighten the thought-provoking content. The cartoons sometimes contain quick, wry observations. Most, however, tackle the big issues.
Jerry Belland looks inward to explore the world and provide insights that help readers see more and know more about themselves. He exhibits self-awareness and an ensuing struggle with his demons—and angels—that he shares with readers as he deals brilliantly with the incongruities of life. He presents them to readers through word and image often presented as humorous metaphors for the psychomachia of contending forces within everyone.
The history of the world is here in one panel. These works will intrigue any fan of comic art with their fresh and original vision.
