New Report Explores how Housing Investments Stimulate the Economy, Create Significant Returns, and Promote Sustainability
Cheshire, Connecticut (PRWEB) June 02, 2017 -- The Public and Affordable Housing Research Corporation (PAHRC), HAI Group’s Research Center, announces the release of new research that reports on ways in which housing can shape resiliency and boost sustainability for individuals and the communities in which they live. The 2017 PAHRC Report: How Sustainable Communities Create Resilient People details how federal housing programs leverage dollars to combat poverty, promote economic mobility for low-income families, save money for communities, and stimulate economic growth. The Report’s release will be accompanied by the second annual PAHRC Report Forum at the Seaport Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts on Friday, June 2, 2017, beginning at 8:30 am, which will bring together a group of experts in community development to discuss the evidence and provide suggestions for making communities more sustainable with a focus on lifting families out of poverty.
Weatherizing units, preserving existing affordable housing, providing rental assistance, and promoting racial and economic integration can reduce community costs, support the development of sustainable communities, create jobs, and position low-income households to achieve economic mobility. Most notably, providing all cost-burdened low-income renter households in the US with rental assistance would reallocate $48.8 billion in rent savings into local businesses and industries beyond the rental market and build family savings.
The report also finds that housing made affordable through federal housing programs lifted 2.5 million people out of poverty last year and helped build resiliency for low-income households by providing additional stability and positioning low-income families to build the financial security and support networks critical to improving economic mobility and weathering emergencies.
Federal housing programs help nearly 13 million people build resiliency to poverty, and increasingly serve America’s working families and those that are unable to work due to age or disability. The number of elderly and disabled households served by federal housing programs continued to rise between 2015 and 2016. Only 45% of households served by federal housing programs have at least one able-bodied working-age household member, however over 75% of these households had at least one member working during 2016.
PAHRC’s Manager of Industry Research and Intelligence, Keely Stater, notes that, “Communities must have mechanisms to help their most vulnerable members who have difficulty meeting their basic needs to move towards greater economic, environmental, and social sustainability. By providing a data-driven snapshot of the role housing plays in facilitating community sustainability, our goal is to provide community leaders with the tools and insight they need to promote the resilience of low-income families and improve their community’s path towards sustainability.”
