New Report Finds Mesothelioma Outcomes Just as Good with Conservative Surgery, According to Surviving Mesothelioma
Raleigh, NC (PRWEB) December 13, 2015 -- Doctors in the UK and Italy have released the results of a report on their experience transitioning from lung-removing EPP surgery to lung-sparing P/D surgery in patients with pleural mesothelioma. Surviving Mesothelioma has just posted an article on the new research. Click here to read it now.
Researchers at the University of Leicester in Leicester, UK followed the cases of 362 malignant pleural mesothelioma patients who underwent either EPP or P/D surgery.
Although the mesothelioma patients who were selected for the less radical surgery tended to be older and sicker, their outcomes were comparable to the patients who underwent the more radical approach.
“There was no significant difference in overall survival or disease-free interval between the two groups,” reports study author Annabel Sharkey with the University of Leicester in the UK.
According to the report in the European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, overall mesothelioma survival was “significantly greater” in older patients who had the P/D surgery.
“The choice of whether or not to undergo surgery and which surgery to have is one of the most difficult decisions mesothelioma patients have to make, which is why we continue to follow the issue closely,” says Alex Strauss, Managing Editor of Surviving Mesothelioma.
