New Resource for Evidence to Prevent and End Homelessness
BETHESDA, Md. (PRWEB) December 13, 2017 -- Practitioners and policymakers looking for insights on what works to prevent homelessness now have a new resource for reliable information. Abt Associates has launched the Center for Evidence-based Solutions to Homelessness. The Center is dedicated to preventing and ending homelessness by connecting research to practice.
Led by Abt Senior Fellow Jill Khadduri, the Center will provide a consolidated evidence base on rigorous research, practices and policies that reduce homelessness. The Center will also house a Systems Strengthening Partnership to develop new approaches and best practices for planning, governance and management of services for people experiencing homelessness.
“We are pleased that the National Alliance to End Homelessness is partnering with Abt to document the research evidence on homelessness and draw lessons for practitioners and policy-makers,” said Dr. Khadduri. “Working with the Alliance, web site visitors will have the best evidence to date to help communities plan and implement services for people experiencing homelessness.”
The launch of the website already includes four research briefs: trends and patterns of homelessness, children and family homelessness, rental housing subsidies and homelessness, and veteran homelessness. Additional briefs will be added over time.
A team of leading experts in homelessness and related issues contribute to the Center and include Dennis Culhane, University of Pennsylvania; Marybeth Shinn, Vanderbilt University; Samantha Batko, Urban Institute; Tom Albanese, Community Shelter Board, Columbus, Ohio; and Alvaro Cortes, Daniel Gubits, Dana Hunt, Gretchen Locke, Alisa Santucci, Brooke Spellman, and Michelle Wood, Abt.
“The Center is committed to bringing to light the best evidence that helps prevent and end homelessness,” said Mary Joel Holin, Abt division vice president for social and economic policy. “As service providers and organizations increasingly face limited budgets and resources, this information will help design the programs and services that work best, based on the strongest available evidence.”
The Center’s Advisory Board includes Amanda Andere, CEO of Funders Together to End Homelessness; Barbara Poppe, former executive director of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness and founder of Barbara Poppe and Associates; Nan Roman, president and CEO of the National Alliance to End Homelessness; and Carol Wilkins, former director for policy and research at the Corporation for Supportive Housing.
