New Studies Reveal Omega 3 May Be the Secret to Living Longer
Burlington, Ontario (PRWEB) October 30, 2013 -- Recent studies published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (AIM) and the Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA) may be the proof the health industry has been waiting for - that Omega 3 does help people live longer. That’s very exciting news for Life Science Nutritionals (LSN), the maker of Adult Essentials Omega 3 gummies.
It is widely known that Omega 3 fatty acids are good for your health, playing an important role in cardiovascular health, cancer treatment, inflammation, depression, age related macular degeneration, ADHD, and dementia . But until now, it has been difficult to quantify its impact on longevity.
“It has long been understood that Omega 3 is good for your health,” says Jackie McKenzie, registered dietitian and LSN health consultant. “Omega 3 was first studied in the 1970’s when researchers discovered very low incidence of cardiovascular disease in Inuit people, which was attributed to their high consumption of Omega 3 fish oil from marine mammals.”
The AIM study examined the effects on cause-specific and total mortality. Using phospholipid biomarkers to establish Omega 3 levels, the study followed adults over the age of 65 to determine whether Omega 3 had any impact of cause-specific and total mortality.
The study found that individuals with the highest Omega 3 levels lived an average of 2.22 years longer after the age of 65 than their counterparts. The lower risk was largely attributable to fewer cardiovascular deaths. Omega 3’s reduced the overall risk by 35%, coronary heart disease by 40% and stroke by 47%.
“This is exciting news for health practitioners who are looking for continued lifestyle changes that older adults can make with diet and nutritional supplements in addition to conventional treatments,” says McKenzie who regularly sees adults who need to make lifestyle changes to improve their health.
The JAHA study looked at the impact of Omega 3 on brain health in older adults as an indicator of risk of stroke, cardiovascular disease and dementia. Similar to the AIM study, the JAHA study measured biomarkers as an objective means of quantifying Omega 3 levels.
The study found that participants with higher Omega 3 levels, particularly DHA, had better brain health, including “lower risk of prevalent subclinical (lacunar) infarcts, better white matter grade and lower risk of worsening white matter.”
“As you get older, the risks of serious conditions like heart disease grow,” reminds McKenzie. “The good news is that Omega 3 has great benefits for cardiovascular health. Not only can it help prevent problems in healthy people, but Omega 3 can decrease the risk for those already suffering.”
The reason Omega 3 is so beneficial for preventing cardiovascular disease is because of its physiological effects which include: reduced heart rate, lower blood pressure, improved myocardial efficiency and diastolic function and lower hepatic triglyceride production.
The AIM study concluded that “the findings support an average target dietary range of 250 to 400 mg of EPA + DHA per day” which roughly translates to 2 servings of fatty fish per week or the equivalent fish oil supplements. The American Heart Association recommends an increased amount of 900 to 1,000 mg per day (or 7 servings of fatty fish a week) for individuals with coronary heart disease.
