New Study Finds 'Cell Block' Technique May Offer a Better Way to Diagnose Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer, According to Surviving Mesothelioma
Raleigh, NC (PRWEB) April 24, 2015 -- Turkish scientists have published their analysis of two methods for analyzing the cells found floating in the extracted pleural fluid of suspected cancer patients. Surviving Mesothelioma has just posted news of the findings. Click here to read the article.
Doctors with the Selcuk University Medicine Faculty in Konya, Turkey divided fluid samples from 194 patients suspected of having mesothelioma or another type of cancer into two groups. One group was evaluated using traditional fluid techniques and the other was evaluated using a technique that concentrates cells into a block that can be cut and examined on a slide like a tissue sample.
“Our study confirmed that the cell block method increases the diagnostic yield with exudative pleural effusions accompanying lung cancer,” writes study author Ceyhan Ugurluoglu.
Published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention, the study found that the cell block technique was able to diagnose two cases of mesothelioma among the 194 patients, while the traditional method could only determine whether cells were benign, malignant or suspicious.
“We are always encouraged by news of diagnostic advances because earlier accurate diagnosis of mesothelioma is key to improving survival,” says Surviving Mesothelioma’s Managing Editor, Alex Strauss.
