Nashville, TN (PRWEB) June 18, 2015 -- GoNoodle announced today the results from a year-long, national effectiveness study of Mega Math Marathon, its physical activity game that incorporates desk-side physical activity and practice of math skills. According to the study conducted by SEG Measurement, an independent research organization, students who played Mega Math Marathon at school showed a 50% increase in math scores over those students who did not play the game.
“Students playing GoNoodle’s Mega Math Marathon showed significantly greater growth in math scores,” according to Scott Elliot, President of SEG Measurement. “Students using Mega Math Marathon increased their math scores by about 22 points over the course of the study, while those who did not play the game only increased their math scores by about 14 points.”
GoNoodle’s Mega Math Marathon gets students running next to their desks while practicing grade-level math skills as a class for 2 to 5 minute intervals. Six-hundred and eight 4th and 5th grade students participated in the study designed to explore whether Mega Math Marathon (the treatment group) contributed to larger gains in mathematics skills than comparable students who did not use Mega Math Marathon (the control group). Students took a national standardized math test in the fall semester (pretest) and again in the spring semester (posttest) of the 2014-15 school year to determine whether Mega Math Marathon users achieved greater increases in math skills than their non-using peers. During the study, students in the treatment group played Mega Math Marathon on average 2-3 times per week.
“The study results are strong evidence that GoNoodle’s Mega Math Marathon is effectively using in-classroom physical activity to improve student performance,” said Scott McQuigg, CEO & co-founder of GoNoodle. “The study is further proof that movement and learning go hand-in-hand, and that a small amount of time invested with GoNoodle yields big results for students, both in terms of academic achievement and minutes of physical activity.”
In addition to the increase in student math scores, 88% of teachers in the study indicated that GoNoodle’s Mega Math Marathon improved students’ math fluency and 81% reported that students improved their math skills using Mega Math Marathon. Nearly all of the teachers (92%) indicated that Mega Math Marathon was a good source of in-classroom exercise. About four out of five of the participating teachers said they would definitely use Mega Math Marathon in the future and indicated they were very likely to recommend Mega Math Marathon to others.
"Being proficient in math and being healthy are important factors in developing the whole child,” said Stacy Danos, Principal of Live Oak Elementary in Lafayette, LA, whose school participated in the study. “Our teachers value GoNoodle, our students love it, and this research further validates the time and priority we place on using GoNoodle’s Mega Math Marathon in our classrooms."
