New Texas Laws Change the Rules of the Road
(PRWEB) September 11, 2013 -- Dozens of new laws went into effect this week, changing many of the rules Texans are used to on the road. Legal resource group Dallas Car Accident Lawyers says the changes could land some drivers on the wrong end of a lawsuit.
The laws were passed by the state legislature earlier this year and went into effect September 1 according to My San Antonio News (09.03.2013). Many are aimed at increasing safety on the roads, such as one bill that requires drivers to change lanes to give extra room to construction workers, or another that stiffens penalties for illegally passing a school bus as children get on or off.
While most of the laws are relatively minor changes, they could have big consequences for drivers who unknowingly violate them.
“Ignorance is not a legal defense in Texas,” said Nancy Trimble, a spokesperson for Dallas Car Accident Laywers, a free website that helps motorists get legal advice after accidents. “Even if you never heard of the laws, law enforcement will still ticket or arrest you for breaking them.”
The new laws could also end up affecting drivers' liability following car accidents, Trimble says.
“Moving violations are a huge factor in determining who's at fault for an accident,” she said. “If the police ticket you under one of these new laws, even if the accident wasn't your fault, you could end up paying the other party's bills.”
Trimble says that some of the laws are very easy to break.
“One bill makes it illegal to use a cell phone while driving around any school property, no matter how slow,” she said. “You have to come to a complete stop before you touch that phone.”
