New Timothy Quigley Short Story Published in The Chariton Review (Truman State University Press)
(PRWEB) February 10, 2015 -- Pixel Hall Press will be publishing a new novella "Kissing the Hag" by TImothy Quigley later this year. But readers can enjoy this fine writer's work right away. Quigley's newest short story "Viking Funeral" is now available in the respected journal "The Chariton Review" (Truman State University Press).
“Viking Funeral” is the story of a man who takes his newly deceased father’s dog for a walk on a chilly, drizzly afternoon when, while during a routine game of fetch, things take a terrible turn. This disturbing, beautifully written tale appears in Volume 37 of
The Chariton Review and can be ordered online.
The Chariton Review asked their contributors to this issue to reflect on their work and discuss some particular craft issue, technical approach or authorial "move" they were exploring/thinking about while drafting the piece that appears in The Chariton Review. Quigley responded: “I began my short story 'Viking Funeral' in third person as the tale is based on a similar event that actually happened to me (but with a far different outcome). The voice seemed flat in the first draft and did not plunge into the story, but hovered above somewhere not quite close enough… In my attempt to create space between myself and the protagonist, I’d inadvertently distanced him from the reader. So, I began a second draft in first person and this invisible chasm sealed itself tightly from the first paragraph.”

- About "Kissing the Hag"
Scheduled to be published by Pixel Hall Press in mid-2015, "Kissing the Hag" takes place in the span of one night, while Julien, the main character, is working the graveyard shift at a homeless shelter in downtown Boston. His life has come to a stand-still since the suicide of his youngest brother Mark: He’s quit his job, moved out of his apartment, isolated himself from family and friends. Throughout the course of the evening Julien takes readers on a dark, sometimes mystical, and sometimes terrifying course as he traverses the dim caverns and blind curves of the human spirit via flashbacks and interactions with shelter guests throughout the night. Celtic Mythology is woven into the theme, as well as subtle, but powerful imagery of the theater, and fire, both central to the book’s motif.
- About Pixel Hall Press
Pixel Hall Press is a relatively new, old-fashioned small publishing house whose focus is on discovering literary gems and great stories that might otherwise be overlooked. Our mission is to publish books that energize the imagination and intrigue the mind, and to be a conduit between readers and provocative, stimulating, talented authors.
In this era of digital technology, Wall Street involvement and merger mania, many mainstream publishers seem to have lost sight of core principles and the purpose of publishing. At the other end of the spectrum is the veritable avalanche of self-published books that are notoriously uneven in quality. Small boutique imprints like Pixel Hall Press are reclaiming the heart and soul of publishing by reviving the idea that a publisher's “raison d'être” is finding and nurturing great writers, and to provide readers with beautiful, meaningful, truly enjoyable books.
