New White Bear Lake Multi-Use Development Project Celebrates Groundbreaking Event
White Bear Lake, Minnesota (PRWEB) November 21, 2013 -- The Boatworks Commons celebrated the official commencement of construction with a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, October 28th, on the new city boardwalk near the site of the new development. In attendance were city officials and staff, members of the White Bear Lake Chamber of Commerce, White Bear Lake Economic Development, officers of Ramsey County and Metropolitan Council, members of the White Bear Lake Historical Society, construction and finance partners and interested members of the public.
A public/private partnership, the Boatworks Commons represents the investments and efforts of Lander Group, At Home Apartments, the City of White Bear Lake, the Metropolitan Council, Ramsey County, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. It is a major step forward in implementing the Marina Triangle Master Plan, a multi-phase development plan adopted by White Bear Lake.
Located on the former Johnson Boatworks workshop site, the Boatworks Commons will breathe new life into a historically significant portion of the lake. The property was leased to White Bear Boat Works since the 1998 closing of the Johnson Boatworks and attempts to develop the site were slowed by site and planning challenges. “Today is a day that’s been a long time in coming,” said White Bear Lake Mayor Jo Emerson during the groundbreaking event. “We need to thank everyone who has helped make this happen.”
When completed, the $19 million project will offer 85 private apartments, a fitness room, both public and private parking, a community room, retail space and public restrooms. The development will surround a dramatic public plaza overlooking a marina. The majority of the apartments will offer lake views and private decks. “We want people to reconsider the need for a lake place when they see what the Boatworks Commons will offer,” says Michael Lander of Lander Group.
Developed by the Lander Group, a specialist in location-sensitive infill projects, the Boatworks Commons will take design cues from surrounding historic buildings and employ the latest in environmentally-sensitive construction materials. “We came to this site with a blank sheet of paper, trying to get ideas and suggestions about what the community really wants. To be standing here two and a half years later in front of a wonderful project is really amazing,” says Mike Cashill of At Home Apartments.
